Ninety-Fifth Day of School

In Writing today, we began the revision process of our latest work. We learned how to make informational texts more interesting by adding interesting facts, notes and/or riddles in the margins of the paper.

In Visual Art we experimented with line and color using oil pastels to make an abstract drawing.

Unit 3 Week 4 Preview

We will be discussing how we can be creative and resourceful and likewise how the characters in our selections exhibit these characteristics and what it is that inspires them. Our vocabulary words for this week are create, hobby, inspire, resourceful, structure. Among our selections this week is a fantasy by Harry Horse called A Friend for Little Bear, in which a resourceful toy bear learns the importance of friends over collecting possessions. Another selection is Karen Lynn Williams' story Galimoto about a resourceful child in Africa who has to make his own toys from found objects.

Our comprehension strategy will be making inferences in order to draw conclusions, our comprehension skill. Our sight words will be after done, find, old, new, work.

We will continue with final silent 'e' long vowel spellings for the remaining vowels along with open syllable long vowels as well as the remaining stanza of our vowel poem.

In Science we will be continue our unit on weather by taking a look and experimenting with air pressure.

In Visual Arts we will continue our study of line as an element of art.

In Social Science we will discuss using maps to find our way around town.

In P.E. we will work on strength exercises and learn strategies and skills for the fast paced game of 4-square.

Eighty-Sixth Day of School

For Writing we had the option of starting sentences for our first chapter or starting a plan for another chapter.

In Visual Art we took to the outdoors to find subjects for practice using different types of lines.

There is no written homework today.

Theme: What I Like About My School

Guidelines:

• Open to K-5th grade LAUSD students
• Posters should be on 12"x 18" quality poster board or white heavy construction paper
• Students should create posters using original artwork and lettering, illustrating the contest theme.
• Must be student's original idea, design and execution.
• No copyrighted characters, photographs, or illustrations. No stenciled or stick-on lettering. No wood, metal, or plastic objects allowed.
• Any choice of color, using colored pencils, pens, markers, water colors, chalk, crayons, or acrylic paint allowed.
• Each poster should have an entry form attached to the top right back of the entry. (See your teacher for this form ((or send a request note with your child))).

Each age category is made up of 2 grades. One poster from each age category will be submitted by the school.

Winners will be notified by mail and will be invited to the AEOE Annual Awards Luncheon to be held on Saturday, March 5th, 2016

Eighty-First Day of School

In Writing today we took a double-wide sheet of paper and began taking notes (we wrote all of the related words we could think of) on our chosen topic. Tomorrow we will continue with this step of the process.

For Visual Art today, we studied the first element of line. We looked at and tried our hand with various types of lines visual artists use. We then took a look at artwork sing each of these types of lines.

Unit 3 Week 2 Preview

This week we ask the question: What do family members do with one another to have fun? Our comprehension skill focus will be to make and confirm predictions using the strategy of analyzing story structure. We will take a brief look at alliteration (consonance). We will continue our exploration with long vowel spellings in particular: long vowel-u spelled 'i_e' (bike, strike) and 'open syllable with i' (pilot, diver). In grammar we will examine present-tense verbs.

Our oral vocabulary words are typical, possessions, connections, relief, and support. Our high-frequency words are call, funny, how, more, so, there.

As you read with your child at home, please continue to predict and confirm as you read (What do you think will happen? Do you think Goldilocks will get caught?). When finishing a fiction selection or chapter, ask your child to confirm predictions and summarize what happened. When reading a nonfiction selection, have your child state the main idea and details.

In Writing, we will begin to revise our procedural pieces.

As part of this unit, we will collect favorite riddles for our "Riddle Wall." Students may wish to share riddles that they may have read or heard at home and write the questions for other students to guess on the wall. Last year, some students had time to make a riddle book.

We may begin learning and memorizing our vowel poem this week, time permitting.

In Social Science we will continue to compare the past and the present. We will also work towards understanding our location in the world while learning the continents and the oceans (tested). We will compare globes and maps.

In Visual Art, we will begin our exploration of the basic elements of art beginning with line.

In Drama, we are combining all the skills we have learned so far to tell a story using dialogue.

For one of our PE lessons we will practice tossing and catching.
